Anesthesia (sedation)

There are often situations in the veterinary practice where anaesthesia or sedation is necessary for the treatment of the animal. As a rule, the anaesthetics are well tolerated. However, this depends to a large extent on the age and state of health of the animal. There are different methods and combinations of anaesthesia and sedation. Depending on the procedure, veterinarians decide which one is best for the animal.

Local anesthesia
A local anaesthetic often used for bite wounds. An anaesthetic is injected around the affected area by veterinarians.

Regional anesthesia
Veterinarians use it to anaesthetise larger areas by injecting the anaesthetic next to the corresponding nerve. Often used for caesarean sections.

General anesthesia
Achieved by veterinarians either by injection or inhalation. Often used before surgery. With inhalation anaesthesia, vets have the possibility to dose the anaesthetic at any time, which is why they like to prefer inhalation to injection.
