Pododermatitis
Pododermatitis
Pododermatitis occurs in dogs and refers to inflammation of the paw skin. The inflammation is usually located in the area between the toes of the paw, i.e. the inflammation is usually only visible at first when the dog’s claws are spread. Pododermatitis can occur in all breeds and ages of dogs.
Triggers can be, for example, injuries caused by broken glass or sharp stones during a walk. But inflammation from tick bites or licking the paw too often is also possible in stressed animals. Affected dogs often suffer from severe pain and itching.
If the paw is not treated in time, the inflammation can quickly lead to a bacterial infection. This is often referred to as chronic pododermatitis, when scarring and deformities of the paw develop and it becomes a recurring problem.
